Grade 2 Mrs.Walton
I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and immigrated to Canada with my parents when I was two years old. I grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick and taught school there for two years before setting out for warmer climes. I taught first grade in Freeport, Bahamas at a K-9 school with seven hundred students. There were over thirty-five different nationalities amongst the students and staff. It was there that I met my husband. After two years, Dick and I chose to teach in a truly Bahamian school in a small fishing village on Grand Bahama Island. There were over five hundred students, and we were the only white people that many of the children had ever known. Those two years left us with memories for a lifetime! From there we decided on the coast of Maine – I taught first and third grades at Rockport Elementary before staying at home for eleven years with our two boys.
I have been at Gilford Butler now for nineteen years. I love being in a small school where we are closely connected to each other on staff and with the students in our care. I consider it a privilege to work with children – each is unique and precious. I strive to bring out the best they have to offer with clear expectations, firmness, love, and recognition of their gifts. It is a pleasure to witness the academic, social, and emotional growth in a year.
Our own boys are now in their twenties, and we have a little grandson. I enjoy time with our sons and Nathan, keeping up with dear friends, far and near, reading, walking, gardening and homemaking.
